Welcome to the Cork depot!

It is the second largest GLS depot in Ireland. It is at an excellent location in the Blarney Business Park. And, according to Operations Manager Lynda Roche, it is run by a great team: InSight presents the GLS depot in Cork.

To begin with the current Cork depot, there was a lot of planning to be done. Numerous GLS employees prepared the move from the previous location, 16 kilometres away in Little Island. Then, over the first weekend in November 2018, everyone from the depot did their bit – and they were not the only ones: the management team, among them today’s Managing Director Swen Krüger, also participated. On the Monday after the move, the three of them also helped to unload vans and scan parcels during the early shift. “The support meant a lot to us”, says Operations Manager Lynda Roche. The efforts were successful: operations got underway without any delays.

“All hands on deck” attitude: to ensure a smooth start of operation at the new Cork depot the GLS Ireland management team including Swen Krüger offered support by the move and by scanning parcels on the first day.

The considerably larger depot strengthens the GLS Ireland network for the long term. The transhipment capacity has been tripled. From the new, modern sorting system to the division of space, everything has been trimmed down to fast, efficient processes. “That benefits in particular our customers and the delivery drivers”, says Lynda Roche. “We can process more parcels and delivery vehicles in a shorter time period.” A first-class level of security is ensured by internal and external cameras and a high-security fence. An additional advantage is that the change of location brings GLS closer to many customers.

A well attuned team with a focus on quality

Lynda Roche ensures optimal parcel processing workflows in Cork and at four other locations. The Operations Manager has been around since the beginning. “Back then, I was asked if I wanted to help open the first GLS location in Cork. And I am still here 17 years later.” Three of the five-person depot team have also been working for the company for a long time. Two further colleagues joined in 2017 and 2018.

“Our focus is on quality in everything we do”, says Lynda Roche. Comradery among colleagues and close cooperation with transport partners play a central role in that, according to her. The Operations Manager mentions continually offering her team opportunities for development, setting a good example and providing support at all levels as further key motivating factors.

Ready for further growth

“Our current location opens up great opportunities for growth with existing and new customers”, Lynda Roche explains. Several companies from the Blarney Business Park use GLS for delivery in Ireland and Europe. “That confirms for us that it was the right decision to expand our presence in Cork.” GLS was also able to attract additional transport partners thanks to the new location, in order to reliably process the increasing numbers of parcels.

“With the state-of-the-art depot, we are perfectly equipped to meet the expectations and needs of our customers in future, too”, summarises Lynda Roche. “The full commitment of our team makes a decisive contribution to that. You can see on people’s faces how happy everyone here is about the move and how motivated they are.”
